Humanity has long been plagued by wars, disease, famine and social injustice. In recent years, new challenges such as climate change, terrorism, pandemics, and economic disruption have also become global in scale, posing serious threats to humankind. World leaders across many fields agree we need an unprecedented level of cooperation between nations to solve these problems. Several proposals have been offered to accomplish this. This course investigates past attempts to solve global problems such as the League of Nations; our current system, including the United Nations; and proposals for a democratic world government capable of addressing these global issues. We will critically assess these approaches and discuss current efforts to implement them.

THIS IS A 2-HOUR PRESENTATION & COURSE INTRODUCTION. ALL INTERESTED STUDENTS ARE WELCOME AND THOSE IN THE COURSE ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND.

Description:
This workshop is required for those students enrolled in PSY3045B in spring 2022. As noted by Madsen (2007), clinical practice must be culturally-responsive, strength-based, empowerment-focused, and family-driven, forming collaborative partnerships. Now, more than ever, humanistic psychologists are poised to affect change at all levels of the human experience, individual, family, community/communal, etc. Toward this end, this course is designed to support practitioners-in-training through the utilization of practical and adaptable interventions such as motivational interviewing, and creative individual and family therapy techniques. There will be attention to strengthening skills within the clinical hour, as well as in the milieu contact.

Participants will have the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts to the case and to practice embodied association to the sandtray images in a group setting.

Authenticity is understood and experienced differently in varied multicultural contexts than in the traditional Western, white, and cisheteronormative contexts These nuances have important implications for social justice issues, challenges, and work. We will also discuss the significance of authenticity in psychotherapy relationships and how to work with diverse clients with regard to authentic ways of living and being in the world.

Description:
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited chronic disease that impacts millions of persons worldwide; however, in the United States (US), the myth of SCD being a ‘Black disease’ persists. Healthcare disparities, structural racism, misinformation, and adverse social determinants of health complicate care and exacerbates the chronic pain and emotional/psychological stress that many children living with SCD contend with across the lifespan. Mental health professionals are key members of integrative treatment teams, as well as private/community, yet they may be challenged in treating chronic pain and mental health issues associated with SCD in the complexities of intersectionality. This presentation will provide a brief historical overview of SCD in the US, the socio-cultural-political contexts that may complicate children and their families’ experiences, the manifestation of the disease and implications for mental well-being, and theoretical frameworks that may contribute to effective treatment/intervention.

Writing a book is not only a personal wish-fulfillment but is a necessary part of thought leadership. Yet, it is one of the hardest part of our professional practices because we never seem to have enough time! As the old saying goes: "How do you eat an Elephant? One bite at a time." So if you ever wanted to attempt this feat, it takes a clear vision, a plan which supports a time-bound discipline besides a good idea. I will illustrate a process that wil take approximately 14 weeks or over a course of a semester to get a working draft that will be editable towards the final draft so that you can produce your book from start to finish within one year or less.

Mindfulness-based therapies are now accepted as 'empirically supported' treatments and are often treatments of choice in mainstream clinical and medical settings. In addition, the prior mainstream taboo regarding including spiritual and/or religious dimensions of life in psychotherapy has been supplanted by the publication of a plethora of texts published by APA and others regarding the integration of these dimensions in clinical practice. This clinical course explores these recent trends that mirror aspects of the long-standing traditions of indigenous cultures, as well as humanistic, transpersonal, and existential psychology in the integration of mindfulness-based meditation practices, spirituality, and religion and prayer in clinical practice.

Description:

Saybrook University is one of our world’s most impactful archangels in the project of re-humanizing the world through celebrating diversity and actualizing its mission. This interactive panel presentation will offer the voices of recent presidents (past, present, & incoming) of Div. 32 Society of Humanistic Psychology, who are also Saybrook faculty, as well as Dr. Eleanor Criswell (Co-Founder of Saybrook), and APA’s Chief Diversity Officer, Dr. Maysa Akbar, in addressing APA’s recent apology, resolution of its own historic and systemic racism, and reported efforts in dismantling racism within the profession. The panel will not only point out the opportunities but what is missed by this statement, as well as what actions need to be done in good faith in order to be congruent with the statement. Breakout group conversations with the presidents will be employed to critically consider the implications of this historical moment and the role that Saybrook can play. The Saybrook community is needed more now than ever, but only if we embrace and enact our deep and intimate heritage as THE beacon of Humanistic Psychology. Our leverage of power in the APA has been, is, and will be, through Division 32, furthering this longstanding relationship. This event is open to faculty, staff, and students. To maximize the interactive nature of this event, especially the intention that multiple voices are heard, the panelists invite you to review the resources below and complete this anonymous questionnaire in preparation of the event. Note: You are encouraged to attend even if you have not had an opportunity to review the materials and/or complete the questionnaire.

Description:
This RC seminar will introduce students to the course and will be an opportunity to engage in experiential exercises where they are introduced to providing clinical supervision. The course is focused on becoming a competent clinical supervisor. Clinical supervision is a necessary aspect of training for clinicians. Through supervision, a clinician-in-training gains necessary clinical competencies in order to ensure that trainees’ clients receive effective and ethical service. This course critically examines methods, relationships, ethics, multiculturalism, and evaluative processes of clinical supervision. Special focus is given to establishing a meaningful supervisor/supervisee relationship. While students will learn about different theoretical orientations that may inform their supervisory experience, they will be encouraged to consider their role in these relationships from a humanistic standpoint that will foster growth in the supervisor, supervisee, and their clients. They will be asked to explore ways of navigating and growing from supervisory relationships that may be challenging or uncomfortable. In addition, students will be encouraged to reflect on their current progress, as well as goals in their own development as clinicians. The course is open and satisfies the Clinical Interventions III/IV requirement in the Clinical Psychology degree program, with Clinical Interventions I & II as prerequisites.

What do you know about your ancestors' Expressive and Creative arts practices? Were any of these handed down to you through the generations? What were the materials that they used? What did they make? How did their practices situate them in the community? In guilds? Fiber arts circles? Spiritual or metaphysical activities? What would it be like to learn about your ancestors' practices? What would it be like to connect with them relationally across the generations and time by making what they made? In this workshop, we will begin the process of exploring family stories and research sources that help us learn about our ancestors' Creative and Expressive practices. To document this journey we will begin making a Creative and Expressive Ancestral Map (similar to a genogram or a family tree) as a way to document what we have found. Please bring family genealogical materials, family photos, objects that your ancestors have made paper, and favorite materials

Description:

Individuals living with symptoms of mental illness have a higher rate of suicide in comparison with the general population. Arguably, particularly within a humanistic relational stance, suicide is often preventable with appropriate assessment and safety planning. It is paramount that clinicians feel well-equipped to meet with clients when they are in crisis. In this 6-hour workshop, we will first discuss relevant definitions (e.g., suicidal ideation; non-suicidal self-injury; suicide attempt; suicide rehearsal; etc.). We will then discuss best practices for screening and assessment, including a humanistic perspective on conducting a suicide inquiry. Psychometrically-validated measures such as the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) will be provided. Safety planning will be addressed at length, including the use of voluntary inpatient hospitalizations, involuntary inpatient hospitalizations, creating a safety plan, and becoming familiar with a multitude of community and national crisis resources. The importance of adequate clinical documentation will be addressed. Finally, participants will be introduced to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s (SAMHSA) guidelines for Suicide Assessment Five-Step Evaluation and Triage (SAFE-T) approach. All are welcome to attend. There will be breaks, including lunch. This workshop is offered for 6 contact hours meeting requirements for the California Board of Psychology. Participants are encouraged to confirm that this course satisfies their state licensing requirements.

Description:
The Mind-Body-Spirit Integration (MBSI) Seminar is organized around a series of lectures, experiential exercises, and small group sessions that are led by expert facilitators. Students will be introduced to the research and principles supporting the use of mind-body-spirit practices and self-care. Throughout the sessions, students will practice the skills, discuss their experiences within the group, and discover ways to integrate these approaches personally and professionally. The MBSI is a requirement for the Mind-Body Medicine and Integrative Social Work degrees programs. New students are expected to participate in the first semester and attend all sessions. All of Saybrook Community (Faculty, Students, Staff, etc..)
