611-Apology, Pacification, or Transformation: APA’s Efforts in Dismantling Racism and What Humanistic Psychology Can DO About It

Sat, Jan 15, 09:00 AM - 12:00 PM PDT

This session is Open to:

All of Saybrook Community (Faculty, Students, Staff, etc..)

Description:

Saybrook University is one of our world’s most impactful archangels in the project of re-humanizing the world through celebrating diversity and actualizing its mission. This interactive panel presentation will offer the voices of recent presidents (past, present, & incoming) of Div. 32 Society of Humanistic Psychology, who are also Saybrook faculty, as well as Dr. Eleanor Criswell (Co-Founder of Saybrook), and APA’s Chief Diversity Officer, Dr. Maysa Akbar, in addressing APA’s recent apology, resolution of its own historic and systemic racism, and reported efforts in dismantling racism within the profession. The panel will not only point out the opportunities but what is missed by this statement, as well as what actions need to be done in good faith in order to be congruent with the statement. Breakout group conversations with the presidents will be employed to critically consider the implications of this historical moment and the role that Saybrook can play. The Saybrook community is needed more now than ever, but only if we embrace and enact our deep and intimate heritage as THE beacon of Humanistic Psychology. Our leverage of power in the APA has been, is, and will be, through Division 32, furthering this longstanding relationship. This event is open to faculty, staff, and students. To maximize the interactive nature of this event, especially the intention that multiple voices are heard, the panelists invite you to review the resources below and complete this anonymous questionnaire in preparation of the event. Note: You are encouraged to attend even if you have not had an opportunity to review the materials and/or complete the questionnaire.
