The Mind-Body-Spirit Integration (MBSI) Seminar is organized around a series of lectures, experiential exercises, and small group sessions that are led by expert facilitators. Students will be introduced to the research and principles supporting the use of mind-body-spirit practices and self-care. Throughout the sessions, students will practice the skills, discuss their experiences within the group, and discover ways to integrate these approaches personally and professionally.
The MBSI is a requirement for the Mind-Body Medicine and Integrative Social Work degrees programs. New students are expected to participate in the first semester and attend all sessions. The seminar is offered at the start of the semester during two consecutive days (virtual or in-person for 7 hours) and continues every Saturday for four weeks (via 4-hour virtual sessions). Body-oriented psychotherapy uses the pathway of connection with the body to approach psychological issues. This course provides students with a basic skill set to bring a somatic focus to their therapy sessions along with introductory knowledge of several body-oriented psychotherapy modalities. Students will explore experiential exercises from some of the techniques with each other and with a volunteer, as well as study the history and theories underlying these practices and the research done on these mind-body approaches to healing and well-being. This event provides an overview of the course materials as well as experiential exercises and discussions to prepare students for the online portion of the course.

This workshop is intended as an informal conversation time for students to raise questions about the psychology licensure regulations and practicum/internship placement requirements. We will discuss the licensure statutes of various states and talk about how they relate to your degree program at Saybrook University (if possible, please bring your state's licensure regulations with you). We will also discuss the requirements for practicum and internship placement, where/how to find practicum/internship training sites, and how to prepare for the placement. Session 1 on Monday is for first-semester students only and it is required. Sessions 2 & 3 on Thursday and Friday are open to all CP students and it is optional.

In this virtual experience, participants will learn formal and informal mindfulness practices that potentiate intentional mindful living. As we all re-emerge at our own pace and in our own way from the pandemics here in the U.S., there is an opportunity to pause. We each have a chance to sit in reflection and note what just occurred and how we navigated the waters and passages of a tsunami of change. Based on the practice of pausing, we’ll share the following stories of courage, of fortitude and of wonder:

Through the application of the leadership tool of a pause, participants will then have an opportunity in small groups to practice the art of pause and share a personal story from the pandemics. This session requires 2 hours.
Learning Outcomes
As a result of this focus on the leadership tools of pause and story-telling, participants will:
· Begin the sense-making process of transition from trauma through the leadership tool of a pause: What might we leave behind? Where might we reflect more? What might we carry forward?
· Become familiar with and gain additional experience with the highly effective communication tool of storytelling.
· Build connections with self and others in a complex system resulting from our honorable engagement in these pandemics.
Process
1. The Workshop begins with an overview of the leadership tool developed and published by a group of business and community leaders meeting weekly through the pandemics, each Monday evening.
2. These leaders share stories of perspectives gained and beliefs challenged.
3. In small break-out groups participants share their own stories of navigating uncharted waters and, what they learned, and where they still hold wonder.
5. The Workshop concludes with the larger group re-convening and taking the opportunity to share insights and where they will carry a pause and storytelling next.

This session opens our three-part Enneagram Workshop.
The three sessions explore how embodied experience can illuminate and complement a layered Enneagram journey towards true nature or essence. Sessions include exercises, contemplations, and presentations on Tibetan Buddhist yogic energy systems, as well as current discussions of ecological and social bodies.
How do we identify and actively touch into self-image; systemic baggage; and, perhaps, some liberating elements? Social hands, primate hands, ancestor hands, racialized hands, and anjali hands may be explored, among others. The objective of this seminar is to provide a brief history and overview of Positive Psychology and Fredrickson’s Theory of Positive Emotions, explore the empirical benefits of experiencing positive emotions, and discuss clinical applications, such as Fredrickson’s 3-to-1 ratio, practices for clients to engage in, and ideas for group therapy. The focus of my dissertation and research is on happiness and the benefits of positive emotions. Positive psychology is the foundation of my clinical work.

This session provides an introduction to TSC 6500 Ecological Psychology. The session is for students registered in the course only, and will review the course goals, structure, content, and assignments. Ecological psychology is a study of the human being as a part of the web of life. This new field is critical of traditional psychology that emphasizes the individual self and its capacities for mastery and control, and which views the environment as distinct from the self. By contrast, ecological psychology views humans as interconnected with the larger systems of nature and subject to its laws, and by virtue of our conscious awareness to be stewards of our shared planet. Ecological psychologists look deeply into human identity and hope that by integrating psychology’s many fields with knowledge of nature and systems, we may improve our skill at raising environmental awareness and translating it into action.

As we all re-emerge at our own pace and in our own way from the pandemics here in the U.S., there is an opportunity to pause. We each have a chance to sit in reflection and note what just occurred and how we navigated the waters and passages of a tsunami of change. Based on the practice of pausing, we’ll share the following stories of courage, of fortitude and of wonder:

Through the application of the leadership tool of a pause, participants will then have an opportunity in small groups to practice the art of pause and share a personal story from the pandemics. This session requires 2 hours.
Learning Outcomes
As a result of this focus on the leadership tools of pause and story-telling, participants will:
· Begin the sense-making process of transition from trauma through the leadership tool of a pause: What might we leave behind? Where might we reflect more? What might we carry forward?
· Become familiar with and gain additional experience with the highly effective communication tool of storytelling.
· Build connections with self and others in a complex system resulting from our honorable engagement in these pandemics.
Process
1. The Workshop begins with an overview of the leadership tool developed and published by a group of business and community leaders meeting weekly through the pandemics, each Monday evening.
2. These leaders share stories of perspectives gained and beliefs challenged.
3. In small break-out groups participants share their own stories of navigating uncharted waters and, what they learned, and where they still hold wonder.
5. The Workshop concludes with the larger group re-convening and taking the opportunity to share insights and where they will carry a pause and storytelling next.

This session opens our three-part Enneagram Workshop.
The three sessions explore how embodied experience can illuminate and complement a layered Enneagram journey towards true nature or essence. Sessions include exercises, contemplations, and presentations on Tibetan Buddhist yogic energy systems, as well as current discussions of ecological and social bodies.
How do we identify and actively touch into self-image; systemic baggage; and, perhaps, some liberating elements? Social hands, primate hands, ancestor hands, racialized hands, and anjali hands may be explored, among others. The objective of this seminar is to provide a brief history and overview of Positive Psychology and Fredrickson’s Theory of Positive Emotions, explore the empirical benefits of experiencing positive emotions, and discuss clinical applications, such as Fredrickson’s 3-to-1 ratio, practices for clients to engage in, and ideas for group therapy. The focus of my dissertation and research is on happiness and the benefits of positive emotions. Positive psychology is the foundation of my clinical work.

This session provides an introduction to TSC 6500 Ecological Psychology. The session is for students registered in the course only, and will review the course goals, structure, content, and assignments. Ecological psychology is a study of the human being as a part of the web of life. This new field is critical of traditional psychology that emphasizes the individual self and its capacities for mastery and control, and which views the environment as distinct from the self. By contrast, ecological psychology views humans as interconnected with the larger systems of nature and subject to its laws, and by virtue of our conscious awareness to be stewards of our shared planet. Ecological psychologists look deeply into human identity and hope that by integrating psychology’s many fields with knowledge of nature and systems, we may improve our skill at raising environmental awareness and translating it into action.

In this workshop, we will explore aspects of arts-based research methodologies. Arts based research methodologies are unique as they use art as source material for analysis in a research project. Arts based source materials may include the art made by others. Examples may include objects made in visual arts practices such as photography, painting, sculpture, collage or practices that engage other senses such as instrumental compositions or a song. Source materials for research may include theater, dance, and other performances including poetry or prose, film, and ritual art. Alternately arts-based methodologies may also focus on the "researcher as creator" including experiential work in the form of Multimodal Expressive Arts practices that create the source material for Autoethnography.
Arts-Based methodologies and also methodologies that incorporate qualitative phenomenological approaches will be discussed. An opportunity to participate in an experiential activity will be offered in which students will participate in a practice that may be used as an aspect of a methodology that yields data to be analyzed during a research project. Please bring your ideas for your Master's Project or Dissertation research as we will consider methodologies that may be a good fit for each researcher's goals and priorities.

Participants will learn the DSM-5 criteria for Gender Dysphoria, mental health outcomes for transgender individuals, and the impact of prejudice and discrimination. Based on the ground-breaking book Drawdown, this simulation takes groups through a process of identifying carbon reduction and sequestration strategies to help countries and communities comply with the Paris Climate Accord. Participants first review the 40 most powerful proven available strategies identified in the research and then, based on cost and feasibility, build a package of strategies designed to meet an agreed upon carbon reduction goal. Through this activity participants become aware of the various methods available and, ultimately, their impact on global carbon reduction. The workshop can be completed on line within 2 hours.
Outcomes
As a result of this simulation, participants will:
· Examine the global sources of carbon emissions as well as understand natural sinks and discuss the geopolitical and economic ramifications of carbon emissions.
· Become familiar with the reduction and mitigation solutions research has determined are the most effective at relieving the atmospheric carbon load.
· Build a coherent and cost-effective plan for reducing carbon emissions within their own sphere of influence.

We will also discuss the requirements for practicum and internship placement, where/how to find practicum/internship training sites, and how to prepare for the placement. Session 1 on Monday is for first-semester students only and it is required. Wednesday is required for second-semester students. This session concludes our three-part Enneagram Workshop.
The three sessions explore how embodied experience can illuminate and complement a layered Enneagram journey towards true nature or essence. Sessions include exercises, contemplations, and presentations on Tibetan Buddhist yogic energy systems, as well as current discussions of ecological and social bodies.
This final session features practices that open the heart center—the heart chakra and organ that circulates flow of feeling—and allow its energy and wisdom to become more available for transformation and spiritual development.

This experiential workshop is required for students taking MBM5510 Imagery in Health. Participants will experience and practice various forms of imagery drawn from traditional healing practices and contemporary applications. By the end of the workshop, students will follow, create, and execute five variations of imagery practices. Students will also create a Vision Board/Soul Mandala which will be used throughout the course. In this virtual experience, participants will learn formal and informal mindfulness practices that potentiate intentional mindful living. Distinguishing between mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation, participants will practice and discuss several mindfulness skills involving the sensory, cognitive, and emotional domains. Participants will experience immersion in several mindfulness practices with both personal and clinical applications. At completion, they will write a personal self-care prescription based on formal and informal mindfulness practices for use in their personal lives and professional work. In this workshop, we will explore aspects of arts-based research methodologies. Arts based research methodologies are unique as they use art as source material for analysis in a research project. Arts based source materials may include the art made by others. Examples may include objects made in visual arts practices such as photography, painting, sculpture, collage or practices that engage other senses such as instrumental compositions or a song. Source materials for research may include theater, dance, and other performances including poetry or prose, film, and ritual art. Alternately arts-based methodologies may also focus on the "researcher as creator" including experiential work in the form of Multimodal Expressive Arts practices that create the source material for Autoethnography.
Arts-Based methodologies and also methodologies that incorporate qualitative phenomenological approaches will be discussed. An opportunity to participate in an experiential activity will be offered in which students will participate in a practice that may be used as an aspect of a methodology that yields data to be analyzed during a research project. Please bring your ideas for your Master's Project or Dissertation research as we will consider methodologies that may be a good fit for each researcher's goals and priorities.

This lecture will provide an introduction to transgender mental health care. Participants will learn the DSM-5 criteria for Gender Dysphoria, mental health outcomes for transgender individuals, and the impact of prejudice and discrimination. We will also discuss the APA Guidelines for treating transgender and gender nonconforming individuals. Further, we will discuss hormonal treatments, surgical treatments, and local and national resources for transgender clients. Finally, we will discuss the WPATH standards and the role of psychologists in writing letters for medical treatments.

The purpose of this workshop is to apply creativity at work concepts to explore our lifework. We explore how adaptability, discernment, beauty, and emergence weave together to support flourishing within ambiguity. Participants will connect personal intention and values to describe a compelling vision of how you would lead yourself and your organization in a way that supports flourishing creativity. We will explore the collective impact of our values and vision – what emerges in the systemic visual representation of our collective values and vision?
We will explore questions such as: What would leading beautifully look like? What did you learn during the pandemic and how did it change you? What does it mean to dance in ambiguity? Please bring your favorite art supplies or a notepad, paper, pens etc. No experience needed.

This session concludes our three-part Enneagram Workshop.
The three sessions explore how embodied experience can illuminate and complement a layered Enneagram journey towards true nature or essence. Sessions include exercises, contemplations, and presentations on Tibetan Buddhist yogic energy systems, as well as current discussions of ecological and social bodies.
This final session features practices that open the heart center—the heart chakra and organ that circulates flow of feeling—and allow its energy and wisdom to become more available for transformation and spiritual development.

The aim of this course is to empower students to be able to critically evaluate social systems and become participants in their co-creation and transformation. Research has consistently demonstrated that the primary determinants of success and failure of teams are dependent on leaders and their ability to coach their team members through crisis. A retrospective view of the process and content of the screening program and related outcomes will also be discussed. This session is an introduction to TSC 6550 Conflict Resolution Theory and Methods, providing an overview of the course purpose, structure and processes. The major themes and debates within the field of conflict resolution are discussed in this course. Students gain an understanding of the tools that are available to intervene in conflicts and an awareness of how to improve their capacity to analyze and resourcefully respond to conflict. Additionally, students develop a critical theoretical perspective on the general field of conflict resolution. Film Synopsis: Equatorial Guinea is a country in which few visual artists reside. Afran is one of the most important and is known for his skills in making portraits and images informed by cultural memories and also for the deep reflective process in which he engages as he makes his conceptual art. Afran's process and the way he works are elements that make this documentary a unique visual experience and make the film especially inviting. In this seminar we will look at the U.S. political economy through the lens of the Kemetic- Egyptian myth of MAAT, an archetype of Justice, Judgment and orderly Judicial Proceedings. The myth offers the example of spirit and matter integrated in law and political economy. We use this myth and its teachings to interrogate U.S. Congressional legislative initiatives in the For the Peoples’ Act and the John Lewis Act. Great coaches are not born: they are created by learning and applying core principles of: individual and group-level analysis, communication, and reinforcement.
Research has consistently demonstrated that the primary determinants of success and failure of teams are dependent on leaders and their ability to coach their team members through crisis. In this program participants will learn and apply coaching tools through six self-paced learning modules, which include recent lessons learned during the pandemic and specific ways to coach towards recovery and resiliency.

A retrospective view of the process and content of the screening program and related outcomes will also be discussed. This session is an introduction to TSC 6550 Conflict Resolution Theory and Methods, providing an overview of the course purpose, structure and processes. The major themes and debates within the field of conflict resolution are discussed in this course. Students gain an understanding of the tools that are available to intervene in conflicts and an awareness of how to improve their capacity to analyze and resourcefully respond to conflict. Additionally, students develop a critical theoretical perspective on the general field of conflict resolution. This class assists the scholar/practitioner in addressing major challenges that call for creative formulation. Such new perspectives may enable the student to be a more effective agent of change, and the field to better address the prevention of violent and destructive conflict as well as the resolution of specific disputes.

This workshop is intended as an informal conversation time for students to raise questions about the psychology licensure regulations and practicum/internship placement requirements. We will discuss the licensure statutes of various states and talk about how they relate to your degree program at Saybrook University (if possible, please bring your state's licensure regulations with you). We will also discuss the requirements for practicum and internship placement, where/how to find practicum/internship training sites, and how to prepare for the placement. Session 1 on Monday is for first semester students only and it is required. Wednesday is required for second-semester students. Sessions 3 & 4 on Thursday and Friday are open to all CP students and it is optional.

Film Synopsis: Equatorial Guinea is a country in which few visual artists reside. Afran is one of the most important and is known for his skills in making portraits and images informed by cultural memories and also for the deep reflective process in which he engages as he makes his conceptual art. Afran's process and the way he works are elements that make this documentary a unique visual experience and make the film especially inviting. In this seminar we will look at the U.S. political economy through the lens of the Kemetic- Egyptian myth of MAAT, an archetype of Justice, Judgment and orderly Judicial Proceedings. The myth offers the example of spirit and matter integrated in law and political economy. We use this myth and its teachings to interrogate U.S. Congressional legislative initiatives in the For the Peoples’ Act and the John Lewis Act. Now, more than ever, humanistic psychologists are poised to affect change at all levels of the human experience, individual, family, community/communal, etc. Toward this end, this course is designed to support practitioners-in-training through the utilization of practical and adaptable interventions such as motivational interviewing, and creative individual and family therapy techniques. There will be attention to strengthening skills within the clinical hour, as well as in the milieu contact. This experiential and interactive seminar is open to all yet required for those who will be enrolled in Fall 2016 PSY 3045B Clinical Intervention II; completion of Clinical Interventions I is not a prerequisite for this RC experience yet is for course enrollment.

This presentation will first describe the framework of existential-hermeneutical-phenomenology as a “weak force form of therapeutic care” as differentiated from strong force therapy, including other forms of “strong” humanistic-existential practices. We will then explore in concrete, therapeutic events and encounters what therapeutic phenomenology looks like from this perspective, as informed by radical hermeneutics and postmodern existentialism, such as the therapeutics of radical bracketing, incessant reinterpretability, change without the focus on change, allowing symptoms to speak and teach, “seeing” the invisibility of lived meaning in each and every moment, and preparing for the coming of the Other.

This seminar will critically examine the various meanings of truth, facts, science, culture, belief and knowledge in a contemporary social and political environment in which these ideas are highly contested. Using a combination of didactic and participatory approaches, the seminar will include exploration of recent attempts to utilize social media to shape electoral and cultural politics in the United States and elsewhere; digital storytelling approaches as a way to narrate immigrant experiences; indigenous storytelling as a mode of social change; and Afro-centric Healing Circles as a way of communicating and creating shared understandings.
