SCORE!

Wed, Oct 26, 2022 - Thu, Oct 27, 2022

From 08:00 AM to 06:00 PM MST

SCORE! is...

A pop-up swap

A store where everything is free

A community marketplace of reciprocity

A redistribution of goods

Alternative economics

A party!!

SCORE! is all of the above and more.

How does it work?

Donation Day October 26, 8am-6pm

From one item to car loads, if you have more than you need you are welcome to donate to the swap. Volunteers will help carry anything, as need be, sort and prepare the goods to be swapped the next day.

SCORE! Day October 27, 1:30pm

The party starts at 1:30 and once the gates are open, HOLD ONTO YOUR HATS! It gets crazy. The music gets pumpin' and the shopping gets crazy.

EVERYONE is welcome, whether you donated or not, to stroll through the free store and take as little or as much as they need. Find that Christmas gift or a perfectly faded retro pair of jeans. The basic concept behind SCORE! is that within a community there is enough for everyone, but it is not being distributed fairly. SCORE! aims to solve this problem by creating a space where goods are freely swapped and traded and shared.

If you have more than enough, you can give. If you don’t have enough, you are free to take. SCORE! breaks down barriers between have’s and have-not’s, rich and poor. It allows for everyone to come and stand on equal footing, all while finding an awesome score!

In addition to the free swap, a few items are specially selected to go up for silent auction to raise funds for the Augustana reciprocity shelf that keeps the spirit of give and take alive on the campus year-round while also tackling a very real issue of food insecurity.

What about the leftovers?

After everyone has taken all that they need, there continues to be community organizations that can continue to be blessed by these donations. Arrangements have been made to ensure that all donations move on to a new home where they are able to support the community and better the lives of others.

In addition to being a social phenomenon, SCORE! is also an incredible statement towards sustainability and alternative economic systems. By redistributing goods, potential waste is diverted from landfills and instead reused by those who have a need for it. SCORE! rejects the universally accepted economic mindset of endless growth, profit, and the power of the almighty dollar, and instead focuses on small acts of reciprocity and good will.

History of SCORE!

SCORE! originally took place in Brooklyn in 2009, and then moved to San Francisco is 2012. It was created by five women (Connie Carmona, Leslie Hermelin, Amy Butterworth, Michelle Honchariw, and Jenny Gottstein) who worked in music, advertising, game design, and event production. They wanted to create an event that allowed a reduction in waste through partying, and have been very successful in the creation of numerous SCORE! events. They have a website called www.heyscoreswap.com which discusses the ideology of SCORE! and provides information on past and current events.

Carmelle Mohr, an Augustana student who graduated in 2013, fell in love with the concept of SCORE! during her time at university, and decided to bring it to campus. Another part of the inspiration for this event actually came out of dumpster diving. She had noticed the amount of clothing and other items being thrown out by the local thrift store, and wondered how these items could be prevented from heading to a landfill. This thought, coupled with the inspiration of the five women from Brooklyn, led to SCORE! making its debut at Augustana in the fall of 2010. It has been an annual event at Augustana campus in Camrose since then, growing and morphing along the way.
