The Making a Life, Making a Living / Se faire une vie, gagner sa vie Conference / Conférence
will begin on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, with an optional, ticketed pre-opening afternoon tour led by Lewis
Cardinal at kihcihkaw askî – Sacred Land in Edmonton’s Whitemud Park. This ceremonial visit
will honour Indigenous connections to the land and set a meaningful tone for the gathering.
Participation in the walking tour is limited to 30 tickets, available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Later in the day, attendees will transition to the evening reception at The Matrix Hotel, where
registration will take place alongside live music by Evan Westfal, creating a welcoming and
warm environment.
The reception will feature a sequence of opening remarks and introductions. Elder Richard
Jenkins will ceremonially open the conference. The event will be emceed by Cheyenne Mihko
Kihêw and will include acknowledgments from Dr. Glynnis Lieb and Dr. Anne-José Villeneuve,
along with government and CGLCC representatives and other team members. Live music by
Emmet Michael will accompany the informal networking session.
On Thursday, November 13, the full conference programming will commence at the University
of Alberta. After breakfast at the hotel venues, Dr. André McDonald will serve as M.C. for the
morning sessions, while Dr. Anne-José Villeneuve will be M.C. for the afternoon sessions.
Attendees will participate in a full day of sessions, including keynotes and panels.
To reflect the wide-ranging expertise and perspectives represented in the Call for Proposals -
which invited submissions from five domains: University, Community Member, Collective,
Government, and Business—the conference will feature three concurrent thematic streams: 1.
Academic and Research Stream; 2. Community-Led and Collective Initiatives Stream; and 3.
Public Sector and Business Engagement Stream.
Although some details of the morning and afternoon speakers remain tentative, the day will offer
a robust schedule, with coffee breaks and lunch provided. The evening will wrap up in a lively
and social way with a trivia and drag event at Evolution Wonderlounge in downtown Edmonton.
Friday, November 14 will begin with a morning session at The Matrix Hotel, followed by a
keynote by Ivan Coyote. Afternoon sessions will be held at both The Matrix Hotel and the
University of Alberta, continuing the trend of knowledge-sharing and community-building across
venues.
The final half-day of the Making a Life, Making a Living / Se faire une vie, gagner sa vie
Conference / Conférence, Saturday, November 15, will begin with breakfast followed by a
morning session including a keynote address and closing remarks. Elder Richard Jenkins will
return to ceremonially close the conference. The event will conclude with light entertainment,
offering a thoughtful and engaging end to the four-day gathering. Through its blend of academic
insight, cultural celebration, and community connection - the Making a Life, Making a Living / Se
faire une vie, gagner sa vie Conference / Conférence will bring together diverse voices and
experiences to engage in critical conversations, connection, and joyful moments.

La conférence « Se faire une vie, gagner sa vie / Making a Life, Making a Living » débutera le mercredi 12 novembre 2025 par une visite guidée en avant-première, animée par Lewis Cardinal, au kihcihkaw askî – Sacred Land, dans le parc Whitemud d'Edmonton. Cette visite cérémonielle rendra hommage aux liens qui unissent les peuples autochtones à la terre et donnera le ton à cette rencontre. Plus tard dans la journée, les personnes participantes se rendront à la réception en soirée à l'Hôtel Matrix, où l'inscription aura lieu en même temps qu'un concert d'Evan Westfal, créant ainsi une ambiance chaleureuse et accueillante.
La réception comprendra une série de discours d'ouverture et de présentations . L'aîné Richard Jenkins ouvrira la conférence de manière cérémonielle. L'événement sera animé par Cheyenne Mihko Kihêw et comprendra des mots de bienvenue de la part de la Dr Glynnis Lieb et de la Dr Anne-José Villeneuve, ainsi que des personnes représentant le gouvernement et la CGLCC et d'autres membres de l'équipe. La musique live d'Emmet Michael accompagnera la séance de réseautage informelle.
Le jeudi 13 novembre, le programme complet de la conférence débutera à l'Université de l'Alberta. Après un déjeuner à l'hôtel, le Dr André McDonald animera les séances du matin, tandis que la DrAnne-José Villeneuve animera celles de l'après-midi. Les personnes participantes prendront part à une journée complète de séances, incluant des discours et des tables rondes.
Afin de refléter la grande diversité d'expertises et de perspectives représentées dans l'appel – qui invitait des propositions issues de cinq domaines : universités, membres de la communauté, collectifs, gouvernement et entreprises –, la conférence proposera trois volets thématiques simultanés : 1. Volet académique et recherche ; 2. Volet initiatives communautaires et collectives ; et 3. Volet engagement du secteur public et des entreprises.
Bien que certains détails concernant les interventions du matin et de l'après-midi restent provisoires, la journée offrira un programme bien rempli, avec des pauses-café et un lunch. La soirée se terminera de façon festive et conviviale avec un jeu-questionnaire et un spectacle de drag à l'Evolution Wonderlounge, au centre-ville d'Edmonton.
La journée du vendredi 14 novembre débutera par une session matinale à l'Hôtel Matrix, suivie d'une conférence plénière de Ivan Coyote. Les sessions de l'après-midi auront lieu à l'Hôtel Matrix et à l'Université de l'Alberta, poursuivant ainsi la tendance au partage des connaissances et au renforcement de la communauté entre les différents lieux. La journée se terminera par un gala payant à l'Hôtel Matrix, avec souper, danse et divertissements, la musique contribuant à l'énergie positive et festive de la soirée.
La dernière demi-journée de la conférence « Se faire une vie, gagner sa vie / Making a Life, Making a Living », le samedi 15 novembre, débutera par un déjeuner suivi d'une session matinale incluant une conférence plénière et des mots de clôture. L'aîné Richard Jenkins sera de retour pour clore officiellement la conférence. L'événement se terminera par un divertissement léger, offrant une conclusion réfléchie et engageante à ces quatre jours de rassemblement. Grâce au tissage de perspectives académiques, de célébration culturelle et de liens communautaires, mis en valeur par les performances artistiques , la conférence « Se faire une vie, gagner sa vie / Making a Life, Making a Living » réunira des voix et des expériences diverses pour participer à des conversations critiques, créer des liens et partager des moments joyeux.
