Celebrating and advancing over 50 years of glycomics research in Alberta with the Glycomics Institute of Alberta Inaugural Symposium.

Scientific Symposium

Date: October 13 to 14

Time: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (MT)

Location: Students' Union Building Cascade Room (0-49) / Virtual

Whether you’re a new undergraduate or an experienced biomedical researcher, we welcome you to join us in person or virtually for this milestone occasion. Sign up to learn about the exciting field of glycomics, considered by many to be the new frontier in bioinnovation. We will be hosting four keynote speakers in addition to seven local guest speakers, all of whom are experts in their respective branch of glycoscience. The topics that our speakers will cover include:

  • Glycoimmunology – how glycans modulate our immune response to pathogens and cancer
  • Neuroglycobiology – how glycans mediate neural cell interactions, neural plasticity and neurogenesis
  • Glycobiology Enzymes – how we can utilize the the molecules that synthesize glycans to alter biological behavior
  • Novel Tools for Glycoscience Research – how we can refine our toolkit with new technologies to address challenging questions in glycoscience
  • And many more!

Are you a graduate or undergraduate student at the University of Alberta with a glycoprotein or glycolipid in your research? If you're interested in presenting your work, please follow the link to our official website.

See our program and learn more about our speakers on our official website here.

Public Lecture

Date: October 14

Time: 6:00 to 7:00 PM (MT)

Location: Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science 1-440 / Virtual

We’ll be finishing off the two-day symposium with a bang – Dr. Lara Mahal, our very own Sherlock Holmes of glycomics, will be giving a public lecture geared towards newcomers on the sugar code, otherwise known as the alphabet of life and one of the greatest mysteries of our generation. Help us crack the code by picking up the clues left behind by the 10 (maybe-not-so)-sweet sugars in "Mystery of the Glycocode: The Secret Science of Sugars."

We hope to see you there!

FAQs

Do I have to attend the scientific symposium in order to attend the public lecture?

Not at all! You're welcome to sign up for either the public lecture or the scientific symposium, or both, depending on what interests you.

Can I register for in person and virtual attendance if I'm unsure of my availability?

We ask that you register for in person or virtual attendance, not both. You may, however, register to attend the scientific symposium in person and the public lecture virtually, or vice versa.

I won't be able to attend the scientific symposium in it's entirety – can I still register to attend in person?

It's absolutely fine if you need to miss a few sessions due to other obligations. We look forward to seeing you there!
