Description:
Which knowledges do we consider “knowledge” in healing and well-being? Historically, perspectives of well-being within underrepresented communities have been seen as on the fringes or not supported by evidence; however, that could be due to bias embedded in what is typically considered theoretical knowledge, evidence-based treatment/interventions, and pedagogy. As a field, social work was founded through the lens of activism but has yet to fully incorporate multicultural perspectives on healing. The result is that many social workers are trained to practice, research, and teach through a specific Western lens. Fortunately, literature and practices have emerged to promote breaking away from that tradition. Attendees to this session will be given tools to engage with ideas and approaches toward practice, research, and teaching that honor cultural wisdom and knowledges.

Description:
This session will provide an introduction to TSC 6615 Organizing for Community Health & Well-Being. The course will provide an overview of concepts, practice and research related to community health presented within a social change framework. Community Health refers to non-clinical approaches for improving wellness, preventing disease and reducing health disparities through addressing social, behavioral, environmental, economic and medical determinants of health in a given population. In this course, students will use an interdisciplinary lens to example how social environment – including policies, politics, and power – can produce unhealthy circumstances such as poverty, pollution, dangerous working conditions, and modes of food production which critically impact collective health. Students will then examine case studies and conceptual frameworks of liberatory social movements to identify ways that everyday citizens utilize their power to advocate for transformative change at individual, institutional, and policy levels. Finally, students will explore how they might practically apply intersectional organizing strategies in their own professional roles to promote health and well-being within communities.

Description:
Conducting empirical research requires many considerations, such as the guiding theory, the design, the aims, etc. Often, researchers are not trained to evaluate their power, privilege, and position of expertise that can influence the outcomes of their work. Whether a researcher is an insider or outsider to the phenomenon they are studying, it's of vital importance to examine who we are, our motivations for the work we're doing, who we are working with in carrying out the effort, the weight of our institution affiliation, and how we incorporate community perspectives and voices. For this presentation, the goal is to inform research practices that are ethical, equitable, and accountable to the communities we serve.

This session will emphasize practical applications of culinary skills, integrating the science of nutrition with the art of cooking, to support mental health and wellness.
