118- Resuscitating the Health Professional Pipeline through Radical Wellness: It's not just your problem, we're in this Together! Keynote with Dr. NanaEfua Afoh-Manin
This session is Open to:
All of Saybrook Community
Title
Resuscitating the Health Professional Pipeline through Radical Wellness: It's not just your problem, we're in this Together!
Session Description
Radical self-care is not something that the professional should have to navigate for themselves, but rather a true investment made by institutions, public and private partnerships to transform workplaces and nurturing an emotionally-well-workforce prepared for the challenges and opportunities to drive systemic change. We simply do not advance health equity without first addressing the mental and financial wellness of the workforce leading change. Shared Harvest, under the leadership of Dr. Afoh-Manin, leverages empathy-driven technology to spread radical self-care and compassion through wellness, service, and student loan debt relief.

About Dr. NanaEfua Afoh-Manin
Dr. NanaEfua Afoh-Manin is a proud UCLA Bruin Black alumni who credits her dedication to community activism to UCLA's Community Programs Office leadership academy and Academic Advancement Program while receiving dual Bachelor Degrees. Dr. Afoh-Manin completed her medical training at URMC, her residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Chicago Medical Center, and her Masters in Global Public Health and Disaster Medicine at Columbia University. She's a graduate of Stanford Business School's Healthcare Innovation Program.
As a social entrepreneur and thought leader in health equity, Dr. Nana co-founded Shared Harvest, an empathy driven telehealth and health care staffing platform. She believes that health is a human right and has helped organizations and government agencies design programs that close the equity gap by addressing student loan debt and other financial, social and political determinants of health.
As an Emergency Physician and Chief Equity & Innovation Officer for Shared Harvest | myCovidMD - she has a twenty-year track record of improving access to higher education and strengthening support for BIPOC and underestimated clinicians. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated health disparities and increased the burnout rates of Black and Brown medical professionals. Witnessing this firsthand, she developed myCovidMD and led a community-based emergency task force to service hardest hit communities in LA, Oakland, and New York. The Community Health Partners (CHP) network is made up of culturally diverse clinicians serving vulnerable residents. This network has reached over 15,000 residents and continues to position itself as a trusted health resource. Dr. Nana designed Project #RESUS and released the documentary, I Am Not Your Hero, to raise awareness, resuscitate the medical provider pipeline and reinforce support around Black, women and first generation health professionals. Shared Harvest is about spreading compassion through wellness, service and student loan relief for frontline health professionals while ensuring they receive the behavioral health services, peer support and capital they need to thrive. In 2021, she received the National Medical Association Community Service Award and was nominated by the LA Sparks as Women of the Year.

This session is Open to:
All of Saybrook Community
Session Description
The Department of Business and Leadership is honored to host Carol Sanford, recognized disruptor and change agent, for her presentation on Regenerative work. Please join for this interactive and engaging workshop to be informed, intrigued and challenged.
Can you discern when a business is regenerative instead of confusing with ‘doing good’ from a human centric view? Or doing less harm as humans? What if businesses were redesigned so they lead to the reconceiving of institutions, structure of society, and ecosystems?
Come listen to how to shift the mind we use, to work on problems and better understand living systems design. Learn how to moving beyond current work designs of human centered ideas. Understand how the concept of employees, managers and leaders can be replaced with non-competitive hierarchies, focused on work, not power. Hear case stories of examples that increase meaning, innovation, and financial effectiveness with 35-65% revenue growth and revisions of how business can work by throwing out toxic behavioral premises of the last century (incentives, rewards, feedback, visions, competencies, saving the environment, and giving back) that many ‘well-intended’ organizations adopt.

211-Introduction to TSC 6515 Organizing for Community Health & Well-Being.
This session is Open to
All Students from All Programs
Session Description
This session will provide an introduction to the new course, TSC 6515 Organizing for Community Health & Well-Being. This course will provide an overview of concepts, practice and research related to community health presented within a social change framework. Community Health refers to non-clinical approaches for improving wellness, preventing disease and reducing health disparities through addressing social, behavioral, environmental, economic and medical determinants of health in a given population. In this course, students will use an interdisciplinary lens to example how social environment – including policies, politics, and power – can produce unhealthy circumstances such as poverty, pollution, dangerous working conditions, and modes of food production which critically impact collective health. Students will then examine case studies and conceptual frameworks of liberatory social movements to identify ways that everyday citizens utilize their power to advocate for transformative change at individual, institutional, and policy levels. Finally, students will explore how they might practically apply intersectional organizing strategies in their own professional roles to promote health and well-being within communities.

This session is Open to:
All Students from All Programs
Session Description
This session will provide an introduction to TSC 7075 Global Governance and the Quest for a Peaceful, Just and Sustainable World. Humanity has long been plagued by wars, disease, famine, and social injustice. In recent years, new challenges such as climate change, terrorism, pandemics, and economic disruption have also become global in scale, posing serious threats to humankind. World leaders across many fields agree that we need an unprecedented level of cooperation between nations to solve these problems. A variety of approaches have been proposed to achieve that goal. This course investigates past attempts to solve global problems such as the League of Nations, our current system, including the United Nations, and proposals for a democratic world government capable of addressing these global issues. We will critically assess these approaches and discuss current efforts to implement them

313-In the Mists: Navigating the Landscape of Ambiguous Loss and Long Covid
This session is Open to:
All Students from All Programs
Session Description
Most humans are familiar with the healthy response to loss which is grief that arises with a death loss. What about other kinds of losses? In this time of the triple pandemic unearthed by Covid-19, myriad, non-death losses were and continue to be experienced at the individual, collective and societal levels. Post-COVID conditions are a wide range of new, returning, or ongoing health problems that people experience after being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. Most people with COVID-19 get better within a few days to a few weeks. Others experience a very different post-Covid landscape in what is described as Long Covid or Covid Long Haulers. Join Mind Body Medicine faculty Drs. Gina Belton and Shannon Sims as we examine ambiguous and non-death loss and apply practices for coping in the mists of the unknown territory that is Long COVID.
