Our annual conference features papers presenting original, unpublished research on any topic or period of German-language literature, cinema, cultural studies, German language and language pedagogy. The 2026 conference is taking place from May 20–22, 2026 on Treaty 6 territory and the homelands of the Métis people.

ROOM BLOCKS
There are two options on campus — hotel and student housing — that have been reserved for German Studies Canada guests. Please review the information below. Room blocks are limited.

Note that parking is available for $25 per vehicle, per night.
All reservations must be made before April 19, 2026. Reservations should be made as soon as possible to ensure rate and availability. Rooms can fill up quickly; therefore the block of room can fill before the block cutoff date. Rates start at $190 per night plus taxes, based on double occupancy.
Student housing
University of Alberta Summer Accommodations
Single (no private washroom): $77/night + taxes
Double (no private washroom): $88/night + taxes
Single Schäffer Hall (private washroom): $84/night + taxes

While we've only reserved a small number of rooms in the dorms, you can also reserve a room outside of our room block as long as they are available. The price is the same.
OTHER HOTELS WITH EASY ACCESS TO U OF A CAMPUS (VIA LRT)
There are a number of hotel options in the immediate area if the above room blocks are booked out. For hotels downtown, the LRT provides easy transportation. A one-way ticket is $3.25. There are two stops on campus - University Station and Health Sciences. Our meeting rooms are slightly closer to Health Sciences (exiting the train on the north end of the tracks), but can also be accessed from University Station (taking the 114 street exit).

What are some neighbourhoods within walking distance of the university or have train access in case I want to book an AirBnB?

- Belgravia (~20-40 minute walk; 1-2 LRT stops)
- Old Strathcona / Mill Creek (10–35 minute walk)
- Queen Alexandra (~35-45 minute walk)
Can you tell me more about the banquet? What about sponsoring a graduate student for the banquet?
The banquet will take place at Lunar, which is located at 8222 Gateway Blvd. Please add your ticket at the time of registration – you can also sponsor a graduate student ticket! Graduate students, you can be sponsored! Please reach out to confirm whether you are hoping to sponsor a ticket.
The price covers food, GST, and gratuity. There will be a cash bar for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (credit cards accepted).
Accessibility Information:
The location is about 2km/25 walk from the conference site or is accessible by Uber, Taxi, or city bus (take bus #4 toward Capilano or bus #8 toward Abbottsfield. Both pick up at the bus mall in front of University Commons, tickets are $3.25.) The restaurant is wheelchair accessible.

QUICK OPTIONS ON CAMPUS
Some of the buildings have food options, though these will be reduced service during spring/summer session. These buildings have a mixture of chain restaurants with some local options (Remedy, Savoy, Filistix)

University Club (on campus around 114st & Saskatchewan Drive)
- Not restricted to members; classic pub food (the nachos are good)
Daily Grind (University Commons)
- Student-union run cafe - mostly drinks and cookies
There is a Starbucks on the main floor of the building we are meeting in.

The below restaurants and cafés are all between a 5 minute and 20 minute walk from the conference site. These are a small selection in no particular order. For other options look at 82nd (Whyte) Avenue between 109st and 103st.

Is there funding for graduate students and underemployed scholars whose proposals are selected for presentation?
Graduate students and underemployed scholars whose proposals are selected for presentation are eligible to receive a Conference Subsidy Award, generously provided by the journal Seminar. The amount of the award will be determined following the conference. If you require a reimbursement form, please contact Treasurer Meaghan Hepburn at treasurer@germanstudiescanada.org Please note: we can only reimburse economy travel, reasonable accommodation, and reasonable transit from host city airport/train station to conference accommodation and return.
What about access and accessibility?
The two meeting rooms are fully wheelchair accessible and are equipped with microphones to support auditory impairment. One meeting room is on the main floor and the second is on the second floor, accessible via elevator or stairs.
