Session Description
Saybrook students are selected because of their potential to make important interdisciplinary contributions towards optimizing individual and collective well-being, but also because they are attuned to social justice and equity. To tackle the enormous challenge of climate change as well as the intersectionally entwined battles for fairness in race, gender, and class, will require that we transform all areas of our economic, social, healthcare, policy, and political structures. We live at a pivotal time in history to save our planet. Your work over the next few years and beyond is indispensable and your influence will extend far beyond your own lives. It will include academic study and professional development, but the foundation will include essential lessons on restoring and repairing the hearts, minds, and bodies of individuals, institutions, and the global community towards a more just and livable planet. This is exciting. But staying engaged can be exhausting without close attunement to your own mental and physical wellness. Remaining energized, joyful, and healthy, while engaging your vision and imagination, is the number one responsibility of the activist-practitioner. The key to thriving in transformative change work, whether it happens in a consultation room, in a board room, or in government, is prioritizing your inner resilience and self-care to avoid compassion fatigue and burnout. That, and participating in community, allowing it to uplift and amplify your efforts. Collaboration creates exponential impact. The Saybrook community is here to help you keep your energy and attention on matters of urgent importance while deeply caring for yourself. This talk focuses on strategies for going the distance during stressful times – and prioritizing the precious talent and capacity you each bring to your chosen disciplines so that you can achieve your goals and make a genuine difference in this world.

Session Description
This course provides an introduction to TSC 6500 Ecological Psychology. The course explores ways in which human beings endanger species, ecosystems, and themselves by altering, depleting, and poisoning our planet. The course should serve all students concerned with how humans created the current environmental crisis and how to resolve it. The course should also be helpful to clinicians whose clients are physically and emotionally harmed by their absence of connection to their life supporting habitats, and whose behavior toward the environment adds to human suffering and to business managers intending to become more effective green leaders. Finally, the course should be useful for advocates for animals, for wildlife, environmental preservation and low impact lifestyles and local community productivity by introducing key concepts about human nature and the human capacity to influence the environmental crisis.

The session will provide an overview and introduction for TSC 6610 Social System Transformation Theory, including an overview of the course purpose, structure and processes. The aim of this course is to empower students to be able to critically evaluate social systems and become participants in their co-creation and transformation. The course enables students to recognize and analyze social systems and societal paradigms as they present themselves in various domains of human experience, develop a critical understanding of how humanistic values, developmental ideas and norms can be applied to social systems, and develop the ability to create strategies for changes in such systems and norms so that they will improve the well-being of the people who participate in them.

Session Description
Let's unravel the mystery of palliative care through the lens of self-sustainability and social justice!
Palliative care is specialized medical care provided by an experienced team for people living with a serious, chronic, and or life-limiting illness. This type of care is focused on relieving the symptoms and stress of the illness. The goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and the family.
Sounds simple. So why all the confusion, and how can contemplative approaches to this essential support nourish sustainability and cultivate social justice when ameliorating the stressors of a serious, chronic, and life-limiting illness?

Session Description
In this collaborative session, Saybrook Research faculty and representatives from the Saybrook IRB Office come together to discuss the concepts of justice and vulnerability in the context of research. Historically, vulnerable people were engaged in research to benefit those with more privilege and power. The US Department of Health and Human Services (HSS) Policy of Protection of Human Subjects (45 CFR 46) addresses these ethical issues by defining categories of vulnerable people. Researchers must also consider the context to assess vulnerabilities and ensure justice, or equity, in research participation. We will discuss these critical ethical concepts with examples to illustrate their application to research design.

This talk will explore a quiet and emerging ontological revolution in the current psychedelic research renaissance through psychedelic-induced nature connection, interspecies transformations, and communication, perspectivism, metaphysical belief shifts, and increased ascription of sentience to the non-human world. Such experiences and their implications for creative problem solving, psychiatry, and the ecological crisis indicate how attuning to indigenous wisdom through psychedelics has potent potential for positive change.

In this session, Dr. Guzik discusses current assessment techniques for measuring creativity, what these tests attempt to capture, and what they may be missing. Dr. Guzik also connects GPT-4’s ability to generate creative output to current understandings of creativity and the limitations of AI-based creativity based on these understandings. Finally, he introduces ways in which future creators will be able to utilize AI as part of the creative process in fields like entrepreneurship, and what this means for future focus on ethics, character, and values in the world of business. The latest AI engine powering ChatGPT, GPT-4, marks a dramatic shift in the creative abilities of AI. Based on research recently completed at the University of Montana, the latest forms of AI demonstrated a remarkable capacity for generating large numbers of ideas (fluency) and different types, variations, and categories of ideas (flexibility). Perhaps most surprisingly, GPT-4 demonstrated for the first time a capacity to generate new, unique, and unexpected ideas (originality) that match or exceed current human abilities using the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT).

Session Description
How can an expressive arts circle awaken creativity and support personal and social transformation? Sharing qualitative research and collective insights, Terri Goslin-Jones, PhD and Kim McCallum, MD discuss their Creative Spirit Circle Process that catalyzes personal and group growth. For 12 years, they have used Person-Centered Expressive Arts within a circle of six members that share leadership to access their personal, spiritual, and creative capacity. Expressive arts circles speak to the power of creative awakening and tap into our collective power as we attempt to meet life’s challenges and help heal our world through personal and collective change. You are invited to use a large circle as a “creative canvas” during our session. Please bring your favorite art supplies, collage materials, and a large circle. This might be a large paper plate, a circle cut from cardboard, thick watercolor paper, or a round canvas. Workshop participants will have an opportunity to use expressive arts and co-create via the circle process. This session is open to all Saybrook students, faculty, and administration.

Session Description
Creativity results from our actions and interactions with the world around us. The author thinks of creativity as poiesis, which means to create or bring something into being. This involves different creative processes, forms of knowledge, and perspectives. The author suggests that three types of poiesis show how the creative agency works: autopoiesis, where a system can recreate itself; allopoiesis, where a system can create something different from itself; and practopoiesis, where creative agency adjusts itself by working through a series of interactions among its creative processes. This results in a type of creativity independent of other creative processes and their own creative spaces, providing a different perspective on our understanding of musical creativity.
