Meet this year's Speakers!

 

Dr. Shazma Mithani

Dr. Shazma Mithani is an Edmonton-based Emergency Physician practicing adult and pediatric emergency medicine. A graduate of Western University (2009) and the University of Alberta (2014), she remains at Alberta Hospital Edmonton. Beyond emergency care, she advocates for health education and systemic change, especially highlighted during COVID-19, through roles with the Canadian Medical Association, Alberta Medical Association, the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton, and her social media presence. She co-hosts The Doc Talk Podcast, making health topics accessible. Recognized nationally, she was named one of Edify Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40 (2022), received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (2022), and awards from the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians and Medical Post (2024). When not working or advocating, she enjoys travel, outdoor activities with her family, ultimate frisbee, and tennis.

 

Dr. Colleen Norris

Dr. Colleen Norris is a Professor and Associate Dean of Research at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Nursing. She holds the Cavarzan Chair in Women’s Health Research and is an expert in cardiovascular health. As Research Lead of the Women’s Heart Health Research Collaborative, she partners with major institutions to improve women’s cardiovascular care. Recognized for her scholarly work and contributions to lay literature, her efforts highlight her leadership, mentorship, and advocacy. Her initiatives have yielded groundbreaking evidence on sex and gender factors in women’s heart health, advancing research, practice, and policy. Her work with the Canadian Women’s Heart Health Alliance and the Atlas has transformed heart disease assessment for women in Canada, applying her multidisciplinary approach across nursing practice, education, healthcare services, and policy.

 

Dr. Shannon Scott

Dr. Shannon Scott, RN, PhD, FCAHS, FCAN, is the Dean of the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta. A leading nurse-scientist and internationally recognized expert in knowledge translation, focusing on improving how research evidence is integrated into paediatric clinical practice and health policy. In her role as Dean, she continues to advance excellence in nursing education, research, and practice. In her presentation, Dr. Scott will also share her personal journey as a woman with lived experience in her own heart health, offering an authentic and powerful perspective on women’s cardiovascular care.

Emeleigh Hardwicke-Brown

Emeleigh Brown, raised in Edmonton, Alberta, has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta and an MBA from the University of Calgary. Her master's sparked a passion for the psychological aspects of business, leading her to a Master of Counselling in Counselling Psychology. She is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) in British Columbia. Emeleigh focuses on mental health, growth, healing, and self-compassion, using neuroscience, evidence-based therapies, and respect for individual differences to create a safe, supportive space. She addresses trauma, life’s meaning, and the link between mental health and women's heart health, utilizing EMDR, ACT, somatic practices, and nervous system regulation to promote resilience and well-being.

Is this a women-only event?

This event is for anyone who identifies as a woman, and anyone who loves women! Sex and gender both play a role in the health inequities facing women. Other factors, such as race, ability, sexual orientation, education, income, and more, intersect to compound the complexities of women's health overall.

Do I need to wear red?

Wear a little or wear a lot! On February 13, people across Canada will wear red to raise awareness about women’s heart health. Wearing a bit of red (or more!) is encouraged but not mandatory. This event is business/semi-formal.

 

Who hosts Gala-entines Day?

Gala-entine’s Day is a grassroots initiative created by women who are involved and interested in women’s heart health research, primarily at the University of Alberta.
