Travel Tips

International Travel Documents

Your passport must be valid for six months past your return date from Morocco. Passports will be required upon check-in at each hotel. Currently, travel visas are not required for entrance to Morocco. For up-to-date entry and exit requirements, visit the US Department of State.

Safety Tips

Visit the U.S. State Department's Travel Advisory page for safety alerts for Morocco, as well as entry and exit requirements, visas, local laws, customs, required vaccinations, medical care, road safety, etc. Make note of the contact details for the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate in case of emergency while traveling. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) for information about your health while abroad.

Time Zone

Morocco is in the Western European time zone (WET), which is six hours ahead of Minnesota's Central Daylight Time (CDT), or one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Morocco permanently observes Daylight Savings Time, with the only exception to this time being the month of Ramadan in spring.

Weather

Morocco's cities of Marrakech, Fes, and Casablanca boast a warm-but-pleasant climate that see average September highs of 85°F and lows of 60°F. With less than one inch of rain typically received, you're likely to have a predominantly sunny trip.

The luxury Saharan Desert camp is located closest to the town of Merzouga, which has an average high temperature of 94°F with nightly lows of 69°F.

Suggested Attire/Packing

While known for being more progressive than many of its counterparts, Morocco is a predominately Muslim country that favors more conservative styles. This is not to say that visitors need to completely change their wardrobe or dress in a manner that complies with Islamic code, but it is good to be mindful and respectful of the culture that you will be immersing yourself in.

Major cities like Marrakech and Casablanca tend to have a more laissez-faire approach to attire and you can dress as you would in any metropolitan area. You will find that clothing outside of big cities begins to gravitate toward more conservative choices. Crop tops, short shorts, and other skin-baring options are better left at home. It is a good idea for women to pack longer shorts, full-length shirts, and modest dresses. If you wish to wear tank tops, bring a lightweight scarf or shawl that can easily be draped over your shoulders when needed to enter religious sites. Bikinis and swimsuits are normal and accepted when lounging pool-side.

Due to its warm climate, most travelers will be comfortable when wearing breathable pants, shorts, and t-shirts.

We recommend packing the following items:

  • Light jacket for cooler evenings
  • Loose-fitting and airy clothing
  • Scarf or shawl for women
  • Sunglasses
  • Brimmed hat
  • Comfortable walking shoes

Wi-Fi and Telephone Service

All hotels in the itinerary include complimentary Wi-Fi.

Calls to the U.S. using the hotel phone will incur fees. Hotels will charge a premium for international calls, so it is recommended that you check with your mobile phone carrier prior to departing the U.S. to verify functionality and costs for calling home. Most carriers have an international package you can add onto your plan for the time you are away to help alleviate the higher costs.

Electrical Current

As a former French colony, Morocco uses the same standardized plugs as most of Europe. When shopping for an adapter, you can purchase types "C", "E", or "F", which are all categorized by a plug socket with two round prongs. The whole country utilizes Southern European electrical standards (50 hz/220-240 volts), so we recommend checking your devices and bringing a converter, if necessary.

Currency

The official currency in Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Keep in mind that exchange rates can fluctuate, so make sure to check current rates prior to your departure. We recommend you check with your bank at least a month prior to departure to determine how much lead time they will need to procure Moroccan Dirham for you.

Bringing cash will be the best choice when wanting to purchase souvenirs, grab a snack, or eat at a small restaurant. Most hotels and restaurants accept Visa and MasterCard; some accept American Express and other credit cards.

Before going abroad, notify your bank and credit card companies of your travel, and verify the fees they may charge for overseas transactions. Make sure you know your PIN for both debit and credit cards, as well as your daily cash withdrawal limit.

Ground Transportation

Ground transportation to all activities listed on the itinerary, including airport transportation for your international arrival and departure flights on program dates, has been pre-arranged for you. More detailed information will be included in your travel documents.

Travel Documents

Travel documents for all participants will be printed and mailed via USPS to the address provided during registration, approximately two to three weeks prior to departure. These documents will include an agenda, general travel information, flight itineraries, luggage tags, and more.
