Accommodations

Costa del Sol Wyndham Lima Airport Hotel

One night: September 23

The Costa del Sol hotel is the only hotel on the Lima Airport premises, located directly across from the terminal. There is a convenient bridge connecting the second floors of the hotel and the airport terminal, but you will be greeted upon arrival by our local team who will assist you to the lobby for check-in. There is an on-site restaurant, and a separate bar and lounge. A spacious spa features an indoor swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna, steam room, and Spanish shower.

Casa Andina Premium Valle Sagrado Hotel

Three nights: September 24, 25, 26

This charming hotel hidden in the Sacred Valley between Cusco and Aguas Calientes consists of a traditional hotel structure plus seven cottages. Views of the Andes abound from almost anywhere in this valley property. Surrounding the reception area, you will find a large fireplace and sitting areas decked out in regionally inspired fabrics and artwork, as well as bar area offering views out into the gardens. Accommodations are cozy and display features of the region's style with colorful, locally produced fabrics. Often, a local craftsperson is in the lobby displaying local wares and producing fabrics on-site. Alma, the restaurant on property, combines traditional and local ingredients to serve three meals a day including a complimentary buffet breakfast. There is a spa on-site offering a soak in the sauna or a massage treatment; you can also relax in the garden hammocks.

Palacio del Inka

Two nights: September 27, 28

This hotel occupies a historic two-story building that was built by Inca slaves for the conquistador Pizarro on top of an Incan palace, and the history-steeped building still delights, with an exterior of whitewashed walls, blue doors, and dark wood balconies. Impressive stone staircases, arches and corridors lead to guest rooms that display ornate period moldings, reproduction appointments, and fine fabrics and upholstery. Two restaurants offer varied menus with traditional Peruvian dishes and al fresco dining; live jazz trios often entertain in the bar and lounge during the evening hours. For an additional cost, visit the Andes Spirit Spa that has a hydrotherapy pool, Turkish bath, whirlpool, steam room, and massage treatment rooms.

Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica

Three nights: September 29, 30, October 1

Remote and pristine, yet easily accessible, Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica is in the heart of a 42,000-acre private ecological reserve. Your stay includes a range of land and river excursions that introduce you to the magic of the rainforest, including a spectacular 1,129-ft long and 100-ft high Canopy Walkway, which allows an incredible experience from over the tree tops. This eco-luxury lodge has 35 wooden cabanas with high thatched roofs and charming canopy beds, wood furnishings and red-tiled floors.

Should the program be cancelled by Travel One, all travel payments will be refunded.

CDE Tuition Payments

2. Register for the travel component with Travel One by clicking the ‘register’ button on the top of this page. Travel Insurance - Required

Our supplier in Peru requires all participants to purchase and/or have comprehensive travel, health and trip cancellation insurance (including cover for pandemic related occurrences). Coverage should include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Trip cancellation or interruption
  • Cancellation or unforeseen changes of flights booked and travel arrangements
  • Emergency evacuation expenses
  • Medical expenses
  • Repatriation expenses
  • Damage/theft/loss of personal baggage, money and goods

Neither the University of Minnesota, Travel One, Inc., nor our supplier in Peru will take responsibility for any costs and/or losses incurred by travelers, or their guests, with regards to, but not limited to, any of the above-mentioned items. Travelers will be solely responsible for any additional costs.

If pre-existing medical conditions are of concern to you, they can be covered by travel insurance as long as the policy is purchased within 14 days of your deposit payment.

If you do not have your own travel insurance, Travel One recommends our preferred supplier, Allianz, which we can provide a quote for you and your traveling companion.

The program terms and conditions include your acknowledgement of the requirement of travel insurance and coverage options.

Travel Tips

International Travel Documents

Your passport must be valid for six months past your return date from Peru. Passports will be required upon check-in at each hotel. Currently, Travel Visas are not required for entrance to Peru, but you will receive a white tourist (or landing) card during your international flight into Lima. Keep the card for presentation upon departure from Peru. If you lose it, there will be a $10 fine to pay (subject to change). For up-to-date entry and exit requirements, visit the US Department of State.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not included in the program costs but is required. Travel insurance can help with unforeseen medical costs, lost luggage, extended travel delays, and more. For a quote, contact Travel One at [email protected] or 952-278-1100.

Safety Tips

See the U.S. State Department's Travel Advisory page for safety alerts for Peru, as well as entry and exit requirements, visas, local laws, customs, required vaccinations, medical care, road safety, etc. Make note of the contact details for the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate in case of emergency while traveling. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) for information about your health while abroad.

Time Zone

Peru is in the Peru Time Zone (PET), which is the same as the Central Time Zone (CT), or 5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Peru does not observe Daylight Saving Time.

Weather

The end of September is the start of spring in Peru; much of the country still has dry weather during this time. There are three distinct climate zones, and you will find yourself in all three throughout the trip. The desert strip (Lima) is the coastal region that stays sunny and warm in the north and cooler and foggier in the south. Lima averages highs of 66 F and there may be a mist that lingers over the city, bringing a chill. The Andean highland zone (Cusco, Machu Picchu) should be dry and sunny with cooling temperatures in the evening that range depending on your altitude. Cusco averages highs around 68 F. The Amazonian forest (Puerto Maldonado) experiences the driest time of the year in September and October - which is also the best time to spot wildlife. You could see high temperatures around 90 F.

Suggested Attire/Packing

The dry season in Peru will give you a range of weather depending on your elevation. You can trek to Machu Picchu wearing just shorts and a t-shirt, but the higher in elevation you go, the colder it will get. It also gets cooler at night; you might want to pack warm pajamas and/or a warm sweater. Peru is known for its wool, so you can also plan to purchase alpaca sweaters, scarves, and hats almost anywhere.

Along the coast, temperatures are milder, and the climate is more humid. A light jacket may come in handy on windy days, but otherwise, pack lightweight clothing that you can layer.

It’s rare for restaurants in Peru to have a formal dress code, so feel free to dress as you feel comfortable.

We recommend packing the following items:

  • Light jacket
  • Lightweight clothing for layering
  • Warm pajamas
  • Warm, or wool, sweater
  • Sunscreen
  • Warm hat (for higher altitudes)
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Bug spray

Wi-Fi and Telephone Service

All hotels in the itinerary include complimentary WiFi.

Calls to the US using the hotel phone will incur fees. Hotels will charge a premium for international calls, so it is recommended you check with your personal phone carrier prior to departing the US to verify functionality and costs for calling home from your mobile phone. Most carriers have an international package you can add onto your plan for the time you are away to help alleviate the higher costs.

Electrical Current

All outlets are 220 volts, 60 cycles AC with two-prong outlets that accept both flat and round prongs. The U.S. uses 110/120 volts, but many personal electronics can run on both 110 volts and 220 volts, such as cell phones, tablets, and camera chargers. Other items, such as hairdryers, are likely to be limited to 110 volts. We recommend you check your devices and bring a converter, if necessary.

Currency

The official currency in Peru is the nuevo sol (S/). The U.S. dollar is the second currency, so plenty of shops, taxis, and restaurants will accept dollars for payment. Keep in mind that exchange rates can fluctuate, so make sure to check exchange rates prior to your departure.

Most hotels, restaurants and stores accept Visa and MasterCard; some accept American Express and other credit cards. However, Peru is still largely a cash society, especially in small towns and villages, so make sure you bring cash in both soles and U.S. dollars, but don’t plan on having a lot of options to exchange money. ATMs are the best way of getting cash in Peru. They are found in most towns and cities, and typically allow you withdraw money in Peruvian soles or U.S. dollars. Peruvians tend to haggle over prices and accept, and sometimes even expect, that others will politely haggle, except in major stores and restaurants.

Before going abroad, notify your bank and credit card companies of your travel, and verify the fees they may charge for overseas transactions. Make sure you know your PIN for both debit and credit cards, as well as your daily cash withdrawal limit.

Ground Transportation

Ground transportation to all activities listed on the itinerary, including your international arrival and departure flights has been pre-arranged for you. More detailed information will be included in your travel documents.

Travel Documents

Travel documents for all participants will be printed and mailed via USPS to the address provided during registration, approximately 2-3 weeks prior to departure. These documents will include an agenda, general travel information, flight itineraries, luggage tags, and more.

The passenger contract in use by the airlines concerned when issued shall constitute the sole contract between the carrier and the passenger of airline tickets or tour/packages.

FORCE MAJEURE: Neither party shall be in breach of this Agreement because of an unforeseen circumstance that makes the execution of the Agreement impossible, unduly restrictive, or frustrates the purpose of the Agreement. Unforeseen circumstances include, but are not limited to, the following: Acts of God, pandemic, widespread sickness, fire, storm, explosion, government restrictions, war, terrorist acts, civil commotion, strike, insurrection, embargo, energy crisis, or any other reason unforeseen and beyond the control of the parties. In the event that a force majeure event makes compliance with this Agreement impossible, unduly restrictive, or frustrates the purpose of the Agreement, and notice is received within 14 days, all payments recovered from Third-Party Suppliers will be returned to the payer.
