Session Description
A meditation on the relationship among health equity, the Indigenous science of permaculture, and integrative health practices
Our ancestors knew that living in harmony with nature and Mother Earth is essential for human beings to be well. Caring for health was and ought to be a natural resource and a right to which everyone is entitled. In this discussion, we explore the relationship among universal Indigenous beliefs, illustrated through the principles of permaculture, together with traditional medicine and derivative integrative health practices. They each consider the whole person within the whole system, observe how the parts relate and connect, and design methods to mend systemic problems in a sustainable manner. In our discussion we will consider whether it is possible that these concepts may be woven together and used to not only create equitable access to health and healthcare, but also break down the barriers that perpetuate injustice.

All Students from All Programs
Session Description
This session will offer an introduction and overview of TSC 6515 Organizing for Community Health & Well-Being. The course will provide an overview of concepts, practice and research related to community health presented within a social change framework. Community Health refers to non-clinical approaches for improving wellness, preventing disease and reducing health disparities through addressing social, behavioral, environmental, economic and medical determinants of health in a given population. In this course, students will use an interdisciplinary lens to example how social environment - including policies, politics, and power - can produce unhealthy circumstances such as poverty, pollution, dangerous working conditions, and modes of food production which critically impact collective health. Students will then examine case studies and conceptual frameworks of liberatory social movements to identify ways that everyday citizens utilize their power to advocate for transformative change at individual, institutional, and policy levels. Finally, students will explore how they might practically apply intersectional organizing strategies in their own professional roles to promote health and well-being within communities.

Session Description
Grounded in the work of Cheng-Tozun’s “Social Justice for the Sensitive Soul: How to Change the World in Quiet Ways,” in this session, participants will explore the intersection between contemplative approaches to end-of-life and transformative social change as an operation toward societal transformation. They will engage in experiential learning and small and large group discussions to support scholar-practitioners in developing capacities for navigating complex social issues while maintaining personal resilience and sustainability.
Objectives:
1. Examine “pathways and possibilities” for integrating contemplative end-of-life practices with social change initiatives, enabling scholar-practitioners to address complex societal issues with enhanced depth and compassion.
2. Analyze practices to cultivate inner strengths, resilience, and effectiveness in roles serving families, communities, and global societies.
3. Evaluate the connections between spiritual approaches to advocacy and social transformation, applying insights to real-world scenarios for impactful and sustainable change.

Session Description
In this session, participants will explore the intersection of Terror Management Theory, Mignolo and Walsh’s concept of the “decolonial option,” and contemplative end-of-life approaches. They will examine how our unconscious fears of death shape societal attitudes, critique colonial influences on mortality perspectives, and explore the decolonial option and contemplative practices for transforming end-of-life care to discover innovative, culturally responsive approaches to death and dying.
Objectives:
1. Analyze the key principles of Terror Management Theory, the Decolonial Option, and contemplative end-of-life approaches, identifying their intersections and unique contributions to understanding mortality.
2. Evaluate how colonial perspectives have shaped societal attitudes towards death and dying and critique these influences using decolonial frameworks.
3. Synthesize insights from Terror Management Theory and decolonial thinking to design contemplative practices that address existential anxiety in culturally responsive ways.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Ruthann Russo
About Dr. Russo:
As an integrative health practitioner advocating for health equity and justice, I provide affordable community acupuncture at the Zen Den in New Jersey and serve as co-principal investigator for the Community-Based Maternal and Infant Health Equity Research Study sponsored by Tammy Murphy, the First Lady of New Jersey. I have proudly served Saybrook University as an adjunct faculty member in Mind-Body Medicine since 2014. With a PhD in Mind-Body Medicine from Saybrook University as one of my four earned doctorate degrees, I am unconditionally committed to lifelong learning.
