Scientific Symposium: 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Edmonton Protocol and Future of Islet Replacement Therapies

Thu, Jun 5, 2025

08:00 AM - 04:30 PM MDT

In 2000, the publication of the Edmonton Protocol (EP) provided proof of concept for a treatment for diabetes beyond insulin replacement. This remarkable milestone helped achieve what was thought to be impossible: Individuals living with Type 1 diabetes becoming insulin-independent. For those with hard-to-control diabetes, this medical breakthrough dramatically improved their quality of life, and the EP became the world’s largest islet transplant program further establishing the University of Alberta as a leading center for diabetes research.

On June 5th, 2025, the Alberta Diabetes Institute in partnership with the Gairdner Foundation will host a Scientific Symposium to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the landmark EP publication. The symposium will feature leading experts speaking on three themes: Beta Cell Replacement Therapy, Autoimmunity and Inflammation, and Islet Cell Biology. Following these sessions there will be a wrap-up meeting to discuss the future direction of islet cell replacement therapy and the connections between basic and clinical research.

This in-person event will be held at the Telus International Centre located at the University of Alberta (11104 87 Ave NW) and is open to faculty, researchers and students. The Alberta Diabetes Institute appreciates your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you at the event!
