ISTAR 2026 Family Fun Day

Sun, Jun 7, 2026

01:00 PM - 04:00 PM MDT

Come join us on Corbett Hall lawn!

2026 marks ISTAR’s 40th anniversary and so the ISTAR Foundation is hosting a public event on the east lawn of Corbett Hall to celebrate! Our family fun day will include cake, games, and outdoor activities for all ages (weather permitting). Join us to raise awareness of our services, celebrate communication differences, and connect with our ISTAR community.

The Institute for Stuttering Treatment and Research (ISTAR) is a self-funded institute of the University of Alberta's Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. We offer specialized treatment to children, teens and adults who stutter. In addition, we conduct research into stuttering, offer advanced professional training for speech-language pathology students and clinicians, and promote public awareness of stuttering and its treatment.

Please register a ticket for EACH member of your family who will be joining in the Family Fun activities (piece of cake, outdoor inflatable activities and games, cookie decorating, face painting). Tickets are $5 each. All ages are welcome!

FAQs

Do I have to register?

Registering helps us have enough supplies available on the big day! We want to make sure there is enough cake, activities, and fun for everyone.

Please register a ticket for each member of your family who will be joining in the Family Fun activities (piece of cake, outdoor inflatable activities and games, cookie decorating, face painting). All ages are welcome!

What does the $5 ticket cost cover?

The ticket cost goes towards the activities and on-site consumables (cake, plates and napkins, give-away items, etc). The ticket price is actually set lower than our cost so that as many as possible can attend! We will also have links to our online fundraiser for those who would like to help cover additional event costs and support research and client care into the future. Please see the other FAQ about supporting ISTAR for the giving link.

How do I get there, or what about parking?

Parking at Corbett Hall is available on site or using the Honk mobile app. Weekend rates are usually $6.50 per day. The location is very convenient to the Health Sciences LRT station, and many local ETS bus lines. Limited free parking can be found within a few blocks.

When you have reached Corbett Hall, please come around the building to the lawn on the East side of the building.

Is there an agenda?

There will be a few time-limited events throughout the afternoon, but most activities will be open for you to stay and play anytime between 1 pm and 4 pm.

What happens if it is rainy or smoky that day?

We have an indoor back-up plan! A few of the bigger activities will not be available in the case of inclement weather, but every other game and activity will be moved inside of Corbett Hall where we we can continue the fun. We hope that the weather will cooperate and we can enjoy a sun-filled afternoon together, but the event will be held rain or shine.

How else can I celebrate or support ISTAR?

Tell your friends! We would like community members and interested people to join us and raise awareness for diversity in communication differences, reduce stigma on those who stutter or have other communication challenges, and celebrate 40 years of community impact, representing thousands of voices and families who have been served.
