Systemic violence interacts at ecological levels to traumatize individuals, families, communities and societies. These systemic forces reinforce and exacerbate underlying conditions that contribute to trauma, often through stigmatization. The effects of trauma can thus last over generations, and contribute to long-lasting oppression. Interventions at only one level fail to address the entrenched nature of trauma. This presentation will explain how trauma intersects at multiple levels, using social and psychological theories. It will examine systemic trauma of state sponsored torture in particular. Also included in the presentation will be examination of community based healing strategies. There will be a review of strategies as well as in depth examination of a community based healing model used by the Torture Abolition and Survivor Support Coalition (TASSC). This organization promotes healing through involvement of survivors in decision making; peer support and peer healing groups; and advocacy efforts at individual and systemic levels.

Implicit bias refers to a person’s unconscious understanding, beliefs, decisions, and actions that relate to their individual attitudes and stereotypes of the world. Implicit bias is a shared human phenomenon that is shaped by our environments over time and often influences how we relate to one another. This training will introduce the concept of implicit bias so that participants can understand their behavior on a deeper level and begin to identify how implicit bias shows up in their lives. Additionally, participants will learn to approach others from a place of cultural humility in an effort to minimize the impact of implicit bias and relate to others from a place of respect, compassion and kindness.

To live at this time in the history of the world and its people, is to wake up in a crucible of fragility, when all the world struggles for a future in the face of an undiscriminating pandemic that brings a discriminating world to its knees. How does one engage with such a reality, not as a matter of theory, but as a matter of the lived realities of people who have little choice but to love, and therefore also hate, differently. What does it mean to be more human today? What are the intersects of and interstices between your life and the histories of the world and its people? How will the new distances emerging in today's post-corona world define proximities? Drawing in broad strokes with socio-cultural and psychoanalytical analysis, and transformative pedagogies of the global South, the session will explore notions of history, of in-betweenness as identity and the praxis of freedom at a time when the each stranger seems an intimate threat - an attempt to think through what love must look like in this time of corona.

This workshop will review the basic ideas of dream analysis held by Carl Jung and will take you, step-by-step, through some of the ways you can work with your own dreams. As the worldwide population is undergoing a demographic transition, concerns around aging have increased. While many scientific studies show the coexistence of contrasting representations of older adults as either frail or vigorous, in developing countries they tend to highlight mostly the negative effects of aging in contexts of social adversity. In this session, we will critically discuss how the theoretical definitions of what it means to age “successfully” or “positively” are playing a role in those observations and the need for context-specific approaches. To support that claim, we will present partial results of an ongoing study about the psychosocial conditions of older adults in Mexico.
