America in One Room- Volunteer Registration

Thank you for your interest in serving as a volunteer for America in One Room!

America in One Room (A1R) is a historic gathering of 500 American voters who will participate in a nonpartisan discussion about the major issues of the 2020 presidential election. The participants—our citizen-delegates—are carefully selected to form an accurate, representative sample of the entire American electorate in all its political, cultural, and demographic diversity.

Over the course of the event, the delegates will learn about the issues; deliberate amongst themselves in a thoughtful, civil, and substantive fashion; and have town-hall discussions directly with presidential candidates. Their views on the issues and the relative merits of the candidates will be documented and shared with the public, candidates, and policymakers, giving a clearer, more balanced, and more informed idea of the political landscape heading into the election.

America In One Room is a Helena Project supervised by the Center for Deliberative Democracy at Stanford University, which has conducted more than 100 such events around the world. The National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago will recruit registered voters to ensure that they accurately represent the entire country and the voices of the American people. By the People Productions will manage the event and the television production. For more information, please visit: http://www.americainoneroom.com/

MANDATORY: All volunteers will be required to be available Wednesday, September 18th in the evening for event training. The training will take approximately 2 1/2 hours. Priority will be given to volunteers who are available for all 4 days from September 19th-22nd, 2019.

Please complete the volunteer registration process, and we will be in touch with you in mid-August with additional details.

Information for Volunteers

Q: What is the goal of this event?

A: America in One Room (A1R) will give participants – all Americans - a chance to learn and to speak more about the important issues now being discussed regarding the future of the United States. We are not trying to promote any particular point of view. We want to be sure that people of different backgrounds and circumstances have the chance to learn from each other and are heard by the presidential candidates and policymakers.

Q. What will volunteers be doing during the event?

A. Volunteers will be tasked with:

●     greeting the delegates

●     guiding delegates around the resort throughout the event

●     registration and departure procedures

●     and assisting the moderators during the small group discussions

Volunteers are invited to witness the plenary sessions

Q. Will volunteers receive compensation?

A. Volunteers will participate in meals with the delegates and will be reimbursed for parking at the Gaylord Texan Resort.

Q: Will volunteers have to abide by a dress code?

A: Due to the nature of this event, all volunteers are requested to abide by a business casual dress code of navy blue or black. For men, slacks and a polo will be appropriate. Females can choose between slacks or skirt and a blouse or polo top. No tank tops. Closed toed shoes required for all volunteers.

Q. Can I volunteer if I do not speak English?

A. A1R will not be in a position to provide a translator for non-English speakers wishing to volunteer. We request that volunteers be able to understand and follow basic English language instructions. We encourage and seek bilingual/multilingual volunteers.

Q. Can I volunteer if I have limited mobility?

A. The Gaylord Texan Resort and Conference Center is accessible. A1R organizers look forward to working with volunteers of all abilities.
