25th Anniversary Celebration of the Edmonton Protocol

Wed, Jun 4, 2025

04:00 PM - 06:30 PM MDT

*Online registration will close on June 3 at 10:00 a.m. MT. On-site registration will be available on June 4 at 4:00 p.m. at the Telus International Centre.

In 2000, the publication of the Edmonton Protocol (EP) provided proof of concept for a treatment for diabetes beyond insulin replacement. This remarkable milestone helped achieve what was thought to be impossible: Individuals living with Type 1 diabetes becoming insulin-independent. For those with hard-to-control diabetes, this medical breakthrough dramatically improved their quality of life, and the EP became the world’s largest islet transplant program further establishing the University of Alberta as a leading center for diabetes research.

On June 4, 2025, the Alberta Diabetes Institute in partnership with the Gairdner Foundation will host a public event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the landmark Edmonton Protocol publication.

Following opening remarks by Bernhard Hering, an internationally-renowned leader in islet transplantation, he and other members of an expert panel will field questions in a discussion of past, present and future islet cell replacement therapies. This will be followed by a networking opportunity in the Telus Centre foyer.

This in-person event will be held at the Telus International Centre located at the University of Alberta (11104 87 Ave NW) and is open to researchers, students, individuals living with Type 1 diabetes, islet transplant recipients, industry representatives, philanthropists, and a number of dignitaries. A registration fee of $10 is required for attendees. The Alberta Diabetes Institute appreciates your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you at the event.

*If you can't attend in person but are interested in a recording or streaming (if available), please register as "Recording/streaming Interest".
