PRESENTATION: Chaos, Authority, and Friendship: Philosophy in the 21st Century
ECHA 1-490
Faculty of Arts
A brief look at the news would immediately tell us that the world is not always a peaceful or stable place. Given that reality, what should one think? Should we rely on governments to tell us how to navigate such a state of affairs? If so, who gave the government authority to tell us what to do? What about relying instead on our close relationships? Our relatives and friends are a constant part of our lives. Are they the support and authority system we should be looking for? In this talk we will discuss how philosophy plays a role in answering those questions and how it can help us navigate a world that seems to get more complex by the minute.
